Russia is doing it the way wars should be fought. The civilian population — tragically — must suffer to win quickly. Enaging civilians keeps down the formation of guerilla movements that drag the war out and make it even more hideous.

Lee nailed it right when he said: “It is well that war is so terrible, or we should grow too fond of it.”

The most tragic thing of all, though, is Russia should not be across the border in the first place. None of this should be happening, and yes, it should be laid at Putin’s doorstep…

This is the argument of war criminals, so congratulations. The deliberate targeting of non-combatants (even for ridiculous reasons like the ones you cite) is a violation of international law.
