“Map reading and land navigation are becoming lost arts in large segments of the population.”
I love me some Topo maps.
I’ve been stuck at home not doing much the last 6 months until I can get a hip replacement (in May). I agree. I’m very much looking forward to being mobile again
Google maps shows our adjoining neighbor’s 20 acres of elevated land being a lake.
The land is probably classified as wetlands by the feds!
There is a 1925 topo map for my area. It is interesting to see how much the roads have changed. Roads that were once winding thoroughfares have been replaced by straight lines with deep road cuts through the terrain. The current road into one area is elevated with corn fields on either side. The old map shows the original road ran through the cornfields which flood several times a year.
We even get to see them when they open the end window and put their trash bags in the wheeled outdoor garbage bin. Yes, they are that lazy.
That is worth repeating. If you do go, make sure your vehicle is suitable for the roads, an RV and a Kia are not what you need on rough back roads in Nevada. Be sure to bring a lot of water, at least 1 gallon per day per person, and some survival camping gear, and emergency food.
And make sure somebody knows to come looking for you if you don't come back at the expected time.
Hold my GPS nav module will ya. LOL!
Have you had the Llano port? It’s soooo nice.
No I haven’t, I’m sure it’s excellent.
Relaxation in a bottle, baby.
It’s a little on the sweet side, but the afterburn more than makes up for it.
can at least switch to satellite view
C’mon, man. Sadly, we’re all talking about an ancient Analog guy. Born before rocket ships ever put any satellite out there in space.
and I love Nevada....when we drive to Las Vegas, I would just love to take some of those dirt and dusty roads to some "preserve".....
but the map was a few yrs old and the darn govt had thrown in a brand new road in our way.....damn communists...
tnks
That sounds like a modern illustration of proof we descended from the apes.
Amen
Many here are so risk averse and scolding of those of us who aren’t..
Ironically, the best vehicle I ever had that was dirt-friendly was a ‘74, VW squareback. I do remember folding down the back seat and sleeping in the back of it!
Deaths like this didn’t seem all that uncommon in California in the ‘60s and ‘70s. People would drive out into the Mojave like it was another suburban jaunt. When their cars got stuck or broke down they were in a world of trouble. No water or survival gear. No one knew to look for them.
But there’s rugged areas real close to LA and OC, you don’t even need to go to the desert. A pal of mine is a Riverside County deputy. A Mexican gardener waved him down so he stopped to see what was going on. The gardener pointed downhill where something in the scrub brush was reflecting sunlight. It turned out to be a car with the remains of young woman in it. She had been missing for about a year, the wreck had been there in the brush the whole time.
