It's "kind of" true. Looks like something written by someone knowledgeable who was told to "write an explanation that is understandable by a high-school student," and who's explanation was then edited by a "journalist," who wanted to make it "more clear."

I mean, look at this diagram, and then read the explanation from the article. Keep in mind that an "alpha particle" is literally a helium nucleus, it only needs to find two electrons to become a helium atom. The energy generated by mass conversion is carried away in the form of momentum; those product particles are haulin' ass.
