Just days after the United States men's national team qualified for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, we now know who they will play in Qatar. On Friday, the draw took place, giving us the schedule for the red, white and blue as they return to the cup after missing out in 2018.
The U.S. were placed in Group B and will face England, Iran and a team to be determined. The last opponent will be the victory of a European playoff with Wales, Scotland and Ukraine being the possible opponents.
Gregg Berhalter's team will play at the tournament after a strong run in qualifying, getting a draw at Mexico and crushing Panama this month. A 2-0 loss at Costa Rica cemented their spot, only needing to avoid a six-goal defeat to clinch. This World Cup will come with huge expectations as the team has more talent than ever before led by Chelsea's Christian Pulisic.
The official match schedule for the team will be posted here shortly: Group stage
Monday, Nov. 21 USA vs. Wales/Scotland/Urkaine, TBD
Friday, Nov. 25 England vs. USA, TBD
Tuesday, Nov. 29 Iran vs. USA, TBD
Group A: Qatar, Ecuador, Netherlands, Senegal
Group B: England, Iran, USA, Scotland/Wales/Ukraine
Group C: Argentina, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Poland
Group D: France, UAE/Australia/Peru, Denmark, Tunisia
Group E: Spain, Costa Rica/New Zealand, Germany, Japan
Group F: Belgium, Canada, Morocco, Croatia
Group G: Brazil, Serbia, Switzerland, Cameroon
Group H: Portugal, Ghana, Uruguay, South Korea
I hope they chew their ears off. Where is Mike Tyson when you need him?
Group of Death - E ???
That game on Nov. 21 against Wales, Scotland and “Urkaine” could be tough—three against one.
I read that the US team is ranked 18th-most-likely to win it all.
Group C looks more difficult to me. You've got three countries capable of fielding a really good side.
Spain and Germany will be the top two in that group.
No doubt, but I didn’t see Italy. Unless I missed them.
I don’t think there are any “groups of death”.
England will win Group B and USA has a good chance of coming in second.
Italy didn’t qualify.
I'm afraid I have some bad news for you . . .
I was thinking that Wales would likely be the 2nd place team in that group. I’m assuming they will win the playoff to qualify.
I don’t see any Group of Deaths this go around, as the powers are quite spread out. Germany and Spain together is the only first round “Death” game, but they’ll both go thru rather easily with Japan and Costa Rica/New Zealand as their next opponents. USA-England the day after Thanksgiving should be quite the TV viewing event and party in America. Of course, no World Cup is complete without the Azzurri. :-(
Thanks. That’s a surprise.
I now know why my friend from Italy has been quite this last week. 😉
Concur. Predict England to go through the group.
Canada in a tough group, but this is best team we have ever had here. The only other appearance at the WC was 1986 and that was a defensive team that failed to score a goal (in Mexico). Canada finished first in the CONCACAF group and has improved its world ranking by almost a hundred spots. At one point recently they were at 33rd. But as they have beaten both USA and Costa Rica in this qualifying, that may be pessimistic. Canada however will have to do well against both Belgium and Croatia who have reached the semis in recent years. The other opponent is Morocco.
The WC is late this year as Qatar has extreme heat in the summer so they have it timed for November.
How many women are competing as men? /sarchasm, that gaping whole between a liberal and the real world.
The Azzurri don’t have anyone who can score goals.
They've had some unfortunate injuries since their European Cup Championship last summer. Federico Chiesa, their most creative player, was a huge loss to injury. Spinazzola suffered an injury in that Euro Cup and is still out. Plus, Scamacca was out injured. The guy projected to be a superstar, Nicolo Zaniolo, has endured two devastating ACL injuries and has never been the same. Italy has not developed the depth to overcome those players but still should have had enough to get by North Macedonia (they outshot them 32-4). Unfortunately, true, they didn't have anyone who can score.
Groups C and H also look tough.
