For Afghanistan, I think lack of understanding of Afghan culture among DC crowd. Pakistan used the USA as a cash cow.
For Ukraine, I think things may be different. DC crowd understands European/Slav culture. They have a history of engagement between Europe and Russia. As of now, its looks like an ad-hoc decision were made.
The only good I am seeing is weakening Russia and may see some duration of peace. Before this happens, they have to bring Russia to its knees and shorten the duration of the war. Bliken is saying war may last till the end of the year. It’s very much possible they are linking this with the mid-term election here. France’s election is over. We may see bold action from Frace.

They did send tons of weapons, the black hole. It's a business ya know. Ukraine is desperately trying to involve the neighbors in the war. The first thing we usually do is take out infrastructure in a war. Russia did not do that so the civilians could leave. That is over now. The weapons not likely to make it and they also need to be trained on how to use them anyway. It's all a bluster. They have released criminals and armed them, sent young men with a few days training to the front lines.

I agree. I was pretty involved with the Republican party for years. I know how how politics and politicians work. I didn’t like a lot of it, but I understand how it is.
That’s why I don’t get upset at every little thing someone says or does.
