I was born in Estonia during the end of Soviet occupation. I was still a kid back then, but i remember few things. Of course it was much more liberal already than in deep Soviet times, but i remember how first our people got hope for getting independence. More and more people dared to do things like bring out national flags and stuff, and then suddenly Russian tanks were sent in. I saw some fear in the eyes of my parents. I even remember that i saw in my nightmare that a tank drove through the corner of our house.. so even though i was just a kid, i understood the emotions around me and it influenced me sooo much. And then suddenly there was declaration of independence and Korbachev accepted it, and Russian troops were pulled out. And During the time when Jeltsin was Russian president, everything seemed fine. And i remember when Putin came to power and it didn’t take much time before relations between Estonia and Russia started worsening. Putin started straight out threatening Estonia and saying that if we don’t change the way we behave towards Russians here, they may send troops in. It was kind of a sudden shock. And as we now know, Putin has now used that same falsification to justify actions against Georgia and Ukraine. And i agree it is soo crazy surreal to see how Russia is turning fast into something my parents and grandparents have told about Soviet Russia and what i have learned in history class about Lenin, Stalin, Breznev and their rules. It is so crazy to think that such kind of things can just so suddenly happen all over again.
Just know that in the world we don’t judge you by nationality. When we see that you don’t like what Russia has become, then we feel for you. We wholeheartedly hope that somehow, somehow people like you could get the power in Russia and turn things around. i agree with you.. there is very small possibility for that, but you know.. one must hope and not give up. I must say that when i grew up in free Estonia i realised that i have grown into someone who would have been surely imprisoned or even shot under Stalin’s regime and probably now under Putin’s regime as well. My mom is constantly saying even here in free and fairly liberal Estonia that i should be more careful of what i say out. That is crazy.. i too see that generational difference. And in my heart i just feel that i can’t accept any conservative and authoritarian politics and thus have been hell of a arguing with some of our own more extreme politicians and their fanatical voters. And for sure, i have been even threatened. I can just be happy that at least i’m not living in Russia. It is just so sad to see how some politicians can fuck their own people

As a Finn, I remember how in the 90s there was hope that Russia would become a free country and there was a lot of trade and tourism between Russia and Finland.
Then Putin became president and everything changed. I did my military service in the navy in 2003 and remember how Russian submarines would regularly enter Finnish territorial waters to test our readiness, just like in the Soviet days (Cold War style). My job was to identify the vessels from their propeller noise (acoustic signature). This became an almost daily occurrence after Putin came to power and they’ve been even more aggressive since then.
Finland is now joining NATO, something it would not have even considered had Putin not invaded Ukraine. You’re right, Roman. It’s not the same country as before.

The John F. Kennedy Library Foundation will, for the first time ever, honor a total of 5 individuals with the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award this year, including Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, The Washington Post reports.
Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson (D), Arizona House Speaker Russell “Rusty” Bowers (R), and Wandrea “Shaye” Moss, who works for the Fulton Country election department in Georgia, will also receive the award.
“These honorees have placed their careers and lives on the line to protect democratic principles and free and fair elections,” the foundation said in its announcement, per the Post. “They embody what President Kennedy admired most in others — political courage.”
