This time, there was no unthinkable capitulation for the U.S. men’s national team with a World Cup berth hanging in the balance.
The U.S. is heading back to the World Cup, clinching despite a 2-0 defeat in Costa Rica on Wednesday night and securing a return for the Americans after they missed out in 2018. There were some eerie similarities for the U.S. in the final stages of this qualifying campaign. It was another four-goal win over Panama in Orlando over four years ago that put the U.S. on the precipice of qualification, only for an infamous loss to Trinidad & Tobago and a wild set of simultaneous circumstances elsewhere keeping the U.S. from competing in Russia. But Gregg Berhalter’s young side flipped the script, avoided the impossible scenario—it would’ve taken a loss by six goals or more in San José on Wednesday to finish out of the top three in Concacaf this time—and will indeed be taking part in the fall competition in Qatar.

Thanks Berlin Freeper. Given that you are in Europe, are you going to try to make it to Qatar? I was in Brazil in 2014, and the atmosphere at a World Cup is amazing - especially early on when everyone is hopeful.
The USA will face Iran, England and one other European team
Group A: Qatar, Ecuador, Senegal, Netherlands
Group B: England, Iran, USA, Wales/Scotland/Ukraine
Group C: Argentina, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Poland
Group D: France, UAE/Australia/Peru, Denmark, Tunisia
Group E: Spain, Costa Rica/New Zealand, Germany, Japan
Group F: Belgium, Canada, Morocco, Croatia
Group G: Brazil, Serbia, Switzerland, Cameroon
Group H: Portugal, Ghana, Uruguay, South Korea
I can imagine your great time in Brazil. My first girlfriend in High School was Brazilian. I was at the Brazil 1 - Croatia 0 World Cup game in Berlin 2006 that was a low scoring game but was really special being there.
The United States have met up with England twice in World Cup play before, resulting in a 1-0 win back in 1950 for the Americans, followed by a 1-1 draw in the 2010 World Cup. Both matches were played in the group stage. But I don't blame them like I don't blame Iranian fans.
Group C: Argentina, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, PolandPoland has a fight to place second in the Group. Watch-out they play dirty. Are there many Mexicans near you?
Group E: Spain, Costa Rica/New Zealand, Germany, JapanReaction I seen from Germans is that this is not an easy group if Costa Rica make it. Considering today's German team I am not arguing with any about it.
