“Hardware as a service”
Sadly, that sounds very consistent with Apple’s philosophy. They want to own and tightly control everything, including users (and before Apple fanboys attack... I’ve owned iPads for 10 years).
I think this is completely different than “software as a service” because the only software you actually own is software you’ve written. Otherwise you license the software...SaaS is just another licensing model. And yes, even if you are running Linux and use only Open Source software, you’re still licensing it. Frankly, I’ve been very happy with my Microsoft 365 and Adobe Creative Cloud subscriptions. I’ve done both the perpetual and subscription licensing models and for software that is upgraded regularly, the subscription basis is nice.
Hardware is a separate issue.
I’m a fan of storing data on hardware that I own and know where to find it.
