Nice try, but you are putting out the Putin spin. Here is a more accurate analogy.
Some part of Canada wants to join the USA so rebels there attack the government of Canada.
The USA provides the rebels with weapons, and then in 2014 and 2015 sends our own troops in to invade part of Canada.
After Canada manages to repel several incursions from the break-away provinces into the rest of Canada the Canadian government and our government agree to a cease fire.
Over the years both sides exchange fire across the cease fire line, with OSCE monitors maintaining daily logs of the shots fired and the direction they came from.
After 8 years of shelling by the US against Canada, and shelling back from Canada against the US positions in the break away provinces something like 14,000 people have died. Most are in the two opposing military factions.
And then the USA launches a full out invasion of Canada.
