If you were a Russian general. You would have to at least give passing thought to the idea the Ukraine operation could lead to WWIII with NATO and even nuclear war.
You would know your operation in Ukraine was not to turn cities into Aleppo or Stalingrad, just to destroy the Uke military and nazi militias.
If you were in such a position, you would have the best stuff reserved for the big war that is somewhat possible to happen.

Russia has many options remaining, one of which is to pull the troops back and start leveling cities with bombs, artillery, and thermobarics. This would cause a humanitarian disaster as millions more refugees flee to Europe who is in no position to absorb them. Already, what, 3 million? Imagine 6 or even 10 million refugees that needed to be housed and fed during a time when energy and grain prices are skyrocketing.
