The Mercator projection makes Greenland look much larger than it is as well.

Perhaps that's why some believe that the melting of Greenland's ice will result in everything being flooded.

Obviously Mr. Mercator made his projection because he was a racist and wanted to make white dominated countries look bigger than black countries. (coming soon to a classroom near you.)
