Watched a video about a California company that takes discarded EV batteries, disassembles them and tests each cell. They reassemble a battery with only the good cells. But each cell is as old as the failed cells. This is several years ago but the final product was, as I recall, $1500. Frankly I don’t see how the labor involved can be paid for at that price even at the time.
Also, Tesla batteries are a good deal more complex with heating and cooling and every solder joint has to be perfect. I’m pretty sure they also have some software in the battery that would almost certainly not work in the above scenario as it would keep a charge history and disable charging to failed cells. Can’t imagine it would allow you to reset a bad cell to good.
Yeah its too bad the ev manufacturers didn’t put their heads together early on and come up with a standard battery that fit every ev no matter what make. Since you can’t charge an ev battery as fast as you can fill a gas tank the way around that would be to have the capability to replace a flat battery with a fully charged on in a short period of time.. If they coulda done that and made it relatively easy to remove and replace that MIGHT help.
That way you dont own the battery you just continuously rent a replacement...kinda like the Blue Rino propane tanks.

They were probably operating under some gov program where they were getting paid to take in the old batteries. Cash for clunkers type of dealio...
