Maybe not today, but the "Lite Beer From Miller" ads of the 1970s were hilarious, and sold a lot of beer.
I saw this commercial the other night. I couldn’t tell you what product they were advertising at all! What I remember about the ad was every middle school band concert I have attended for the past ten years. To say I have heard every piece of music in the middle school’s music library would be an understatement since all five of the grandkids who live in the area have attended this same school. I’m fairly certain I’ve heard everything in the high school’s library too.
Oh, they were selling a car?
Men loved the babes fighting over “Great taste” “Less filling.” They wouldn’t dare produce something like that now.
Saabs were renowned as a homosexual favorite brand.

Another poster said that’s been taken up by Subaru now, I’m not sure because their factory is nearby me, and a LOT of “normal” families drive them.
those ads
we’re clever and funny, with a catchy slogan.
I talk about these white pajama boys in the intro to this post
I am convinced that there is a lot of hypnotism and subliminal messaging going on with the ads.
The content may not matter if that is correct.
The hypnosis is easiest to spot in the car ads.
They will show vehicles driving left to right, then right to left, then left to right, then right to left, in an effort to hypnotize the viewer and make them more suggestible.
Another “tell” that you can see is if you turn off the lights in the room while a TV ad is on.
Look at the wall opposite the TV.
You will see a lot of flashing—on—off—on—off...
More attempts at hypnosis.
who are they targeting
I am gross and perverted
Im obsessed n deranged
I have existed for years
But very little had changed
I am the tool of the government
And industry too
For I am destined to rule
And regulate you
I may be vile and pernicious
But you can’t look away
I make you think Im delicious
With the stuff that I say
I am the best you can get
Have you guessed me yet?
I am the slime oozin out
From your tv set
You will obey me while I lead you
And eat the garbage that I feed you
Until the day that we don’t need you
Don’t got for help...no one will heed you
Your mind is totally controlled
It has been stuffed into my mold
And you will do as you are told
Until the rights to you are sold
That’s right, folks..
Don’t touch that dial
Well, I am the slime from your video
Oozin along on your livinroom floor
I am the slime from your video
Cant stop the slime, people, lookit me go
-Frank Zappa
When Miller was getting ready to launch their Lite Beer, there was a concern that it might be perceived as a "sissy" beer by regular beer drinkers. To counter that perception, they used guys like Dick Butkus, Bubba Smith, and Billy Martin in their ads. They also brought in people like Rodney Dangerfield, Bob Uecker, and Mickey Spillane and his "Doll."
Many decades ago when I was in Marketing class in Business School, they taught us how the “big boys” did it.
They did not have one target.
What they did was try a variety of different ads in different markets to see how it affected sales volume for time (say for six months or so).
Then they could rate the ads based on how they affected sales and go with the ones that drove the most increased sales.
It worked a lot better than marketing “experts” trying to guess at the target market and the ads that worked.
Brilliant and it worked
