Even before I knew that Sulu was a flaming fag my opinion on the main characters of TOS was:
Spock==> The best,by far
Bones==> Great
Uhura==> Great
Scotty==> Great
Checkov=> Good
Kirk===> OK
Sulu==> Terrible

Captain Kirk was campy but he had charisma.
