The white Columbus police officer who fatally shot shot a 16-year-old black girl last year has been cleared of any criminal wrongdoing, Ohio prosecutors announced on Friday.
Ma'Khia Bryant was killed last April by Nicholas Reardon after she swung a knife at another young woman. Reardon was 23 years old at the time.
Police have said they were called to Bryant's foster home on April 20, 2021, because a group of girls was threatening to stab other members of the household.
Body camera footage showed Reardon, who was 23 at the time, asking what was going on when he arrived at the scene. Just seconds later, Bryant could be seen lunging at an older woman with a knife.
Bryant was then shot four times and died from her injuries. The coroner listed the cause of death as a homicide - a medical determination used in cases where someone has died at another's hand. It does not imply criminal intent.
Her killing further heightened racial tensions as it came just moments before the Derek Chauvin verdict.
It also cast a light on the state's foster care system - and ultimately led to a Justice Department review of the police department in Ohio's capital city.
But on Friday, a grand jury issued a 'no bill' - meaning they did not find probable cause for murder charges was committed.
In announcing the grand jury decision, special prosecutors Tim Merkle and Gary Shroyer noted: 'Under Ohio law the use of deadly force by a police officer is justified when there exists an immediate or imminent threat of death or serious bodily injury to the officer or another.'
They said the decision followed a full review of the shooting.

Did you notice how the headline of the newspaper declared her death as murder? No bias there?
Absolutely a righteous shoot. If they hadn’t been acting like a pack of feral animals this wouldn’t have happened.
The Tueller Drill teaches that an attacker can cover 21 feet in 1.5 seconds, which is longer than most people can effectively draw from concealment.
If an armed belligerent is within about 21 feet, you should draw and issue commands to drop the weapon. If he instead advances toward you, you should shoot to stop. Even if you shoot an attacker at 21 feet, if he's hyped up sufficiently, he can still close the distance and stab you before he drops, so once you start shooting, you should keep shooting until he drops.
Whoever the idiot is that wrote that headline doesn’t know the difference between murder and homicide. In this case, justifiable homicide. That, or he/she just wants to trigger and inflame.
Lol! I’m guessing that police report was later edited and revised.
I remember seeing the video of this on TPool and Tatum’s. The copper was obviously defending the person about to be stabbed.
Gotta love the losers on MSM blaming the copper for not having simply shot the murdering By** by shooting her in the leg. Do any of you airheads have any idea how difficult it is to shoot a limb? When in motion?
Also, what about the guy who was kicking someone in the head on the curb when the coppers showed up? Was he ever arrested?
Ma’Khai was dead the day her trash mother gave her that ridiculous name.
I remember the media frenzy claiming it was common for kids to tussle like that... with knives...
Her killing further heightened racial tensions.
How come that never happens when it’s a black on black issue sounds like a race baiting issue.
The question becomes, “how does one adjust to the 21 foot, 1.5 second situation?”
Simple. Where possible, backup while drawing your weapon, thereby giving you more valuable time!
In such situations, it is incumbent on the attackee to be aware of their surroundings. In a possible other situation where it may work, turn and run until your weapon is drawn. Then defend!
“I remember seeing the video of this on TPool and Tatum’s. The copper was obviously defending the person about to be stabbed”
And the bystanders shifted in an instant from egging her on to yelling “she’s just a baby”.
“Gotta love the losers on MSM blaming the copper for not having simply shot the murdering By** by shooting her in the leg. Do any of you airheads have any idea how difficult it is to shoot a limb? When in motion?”
You can always tell those who’ve never shot anything but their mouths.
# I remember that incident, and the video. He was clearly justified.
Same here. Absolutely agreed
Also, a leg wound can still kill-if you hit a vein or artery, you can cause the person you shot to bleed out.
When you are an older person, facing a physically fit young thug, moving away fast enough is unlikely to be an option.
But, once you draw, it is a good idea to put some distance between yourself and the attacker while commanding him to drop his weapon.
