The mayor of Melitopol, Ukraine, was abducted Friday by Russians, according to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, in what it calls "a war crime under the Geneva Conventions."

According to Ukraine's parliament, Mayor Ivan Fedorov was detained by approximately 10 people while in the city center.

"During Fedorov's abduction, they put a plastic bag on his head," the parliament said on its official Twitter account.

The ministry has called on the international community to help free Fedorov.

"Russian troops, who have been launching missile and bomb attacks on civilian facilities and infrastructure in Ukraine, including children's hospitals and schools, over the course of two week, are cynically accusing the mayor of 'terrorism,'" the ministry wrote on its verified Facebook page.

"The fact of the abduction of the mayor of Melitopol, along with hundreds of other facts of war crimes by Russian occupiers on the Ukrainian soil, are being carefully documented by law enforcement agencies. The perpetrators of this and other crimes will be brought to the strictest responsibility."

The more likely story is that the mayor ‘abducted’ as much of the city treasury that he could get his hands on, and headed for a safer refuge.

That nap hugely overstates the geographic area controlled by the Russian military.

Not quite, the Ukrainians still have about 90k in the near-cauldron in Donbass; this was the strike force intended to overrun DNR/LNR in March.

Other than this, yes, only urban guerilla warfare using civilians as human shields.

Be careful with maps from this source. The author has a bizarre idea of using red shading to denote the areas where he thinks there will be action in the future. These areas are not controlled by Russian and there is no fighting there now. Particularly misleading is his marking of the area adjacent to Trans-Dnepr enclave -— no fighting there at all.

How do you know that? I mean, how do you know what the actual area is?

Where was the Comedian’s defense minister when 4 Russian military columns strolled into his country?

I’m not a military type.

But

Why wouldn’t you try to throw all your armed forces at 1 or 2 of those columns?

I mean “punch the bear in the face” and then go guerilla tactics. Instead the Ukrainian liberal democrats went guerilla from the get go.

I don’t get Zelensky, I don’t get Zelensky one bit.

“I mean “punch the bear in the face” and then go guerilla tactics. Instead the Ukrainian liberal democrats went guerilla from the get go.”

I’m reminded of a WWII movie where a general is getting criticized by a reporter who says the general doesn’t understand what needs to happen. The general snaps, “I don’t understand? Here’s what I understand. For every hour I press the advance twelve hundred of my men die. While you’ve been sipping your coffee I’ve lost about ninety men. That’s what I understand.”
