The way large numbers of Balts fought for the Nazis? The way Finns and Poles fought for Russia when the Tsar ruled their lands? This is pretty standard stuff. That’s why we get involved. People will flip to stay alive. If Russia or Germany had conquered Europe, we would be speaking Russian or German today. That’s the reality of being conquered - you serve your new rulers or die.

If we’re going to start questioning motivations, I could equally question yours. But I won’t. The fact is that neutrality doesn’t work. Switzerland and Sweden were allied with Germany with all kinds of cozy secret deals. They avoided Allied bombs by not making it explicit. If there were any justice in this world, they would have been bombed to rubble during the war.
