Hey Linux Users: New Steam Deck Owners Really Need Your Help
Forbes ^ | Mar 4, 2022 | Jason Evangelho

Valve’s Steam Deck is capable of being much more than a handheld game console. It doubles as a powerful Linux PC that could realistically be your daily driver. Because of that, some experienced PC gamers may feel completely out of their depth when booting into the Steam Deck’s desktop mode.

...

And remember that Generation Z grew up without a basic understanding of filesystems and operating system folder structures. It’s not their fault. Everything is an app or Google search away now.

They main their smartphones, not laptops.

These users are asking very honest, very innocent questions. Don’t laugh. Don’t judge. Jump in and help. Especially if you want to see desktop Linux marketshare increase. . .

I have a huge enthusiasm for what Valve has done here. This is a serious disruption in the Big Tech force.

I'm very happy myself to help anybody at any time to get the heck off of any of the offerings of the 5 Big Tech corporations. An increase in Linux means that Google loses, Apple loses, and Microsoft loses. That's a goal worth fighting for.

Valve's Steam Deck just for this reason, is completely amazing.

“completely out of their depth when booting into the Steam Deck’s desktop mode.”

Any screenshots? Are we talking a decent GUI desktop, terminal only, a barebones thing or ?

Console gamers dont care about disk partitions, USB vendor codes, process ids, etc. They buy consoles because they dont want to learn, or they want to learn the least amount possible in order to have their game work.

A PC is a TOOL. One that you have to learn. And in the case of a Linux PC, it is a highly customizable tool that requires event more learning.

The point here is that no, it is not a requirement.

Valve is creating this as a closed-hood ready to use turnkey solution, but if anybody should choose to open the hood, it’s not locked and it easily opens.

The beauty of Valve’s goals is that they aim to get all games working out of the box with no muss or fuss. Just click and play. It is for all practical purposes a gaming console. It just so happens to be everything else as well.

“They main their smartphones, not laptops”

When did “main” become a verb?

Gives new meaning to the term "script kiddies".

I am not sure why I would want this as opposed to a nice Android phone running Lineage OS.
