It never turns where you can see the other side of the moon. We always get the same view.

I misspoke. The moon turns a full rotation on its axis each time it goes around the earth. That is close to a 28 day cycle.

Set up a model yourself and observe: Use one ball to represent the earth. Use another to represent the moon. Draw a smiley face on the moon. Hold it several inches from the earth, and then point the smiley at the earth. Now orbit the moon around the earth keeping the smiley pointed toward the earth. In order to do that you must rotate the moon once about its axis.
