NBC Boston 10 ^ | March 1, 2022 | Olessa Stepanova

The Boston accent was ranked as the most annoying in the U.S., according to a new survey, but it also ranked among the top 10 smartest and sexiest.

Preply, a Brookline-based online language learning platform, took a survey of more than 1,700 people across the country on the most loved and hated accents. The Boston accent came out on top as the most annoying, followed by the Midwestern accent.

When it comes to the sexiest accent, Boston ranked number six out of 10. The top spot was taken by the southern accent.

Boston also came in sixth place for the most trustworthy accent. The Midwestern accent took the number one spot for trustworthiness.

Bostonians scored higher for sounding smart, coming in at number four, with the New York accent taking the top spot.

counterman: Fuh-hee-ya?

me: Fajita? No thanks. Just the burger

counterman: Fah-hee-ya?

etc.

What qualifies as a Midwestern accent?

If they find it annoying, they are probably thinking of the Chicago accent. See the SNL skits about "Da Bears." Hillary Clinton has a sort of Chicago accent and it's annoying.

Older cities have accents. The newsreader or General American accent comes more out of Missouri, Iowa, and Nebraska, I think.

Now this is what I would call a very important survey. What a waste.

Some may but I’m from the area and say

Boston has a range of different accents. A local can tell the difference between North Shore, Southie/Dorchester, South Shore...and then the rich bastards from the western suburbs.

If you want to hear what I lived with in college...watch the Sam Adams commercial. Or search for the You Tube slip of Casey Afflect’s Dunkin Donuts commercial from SNL a few years ago.

My wife went to broadcasting school in Boston. She tells of the struggles of the Boston kids trying to get rid of their accents so they could work on TV and radio. Being from Western MA, our accents are much more neutral.

It is funny though, if I drive east of Worcester (Woo-Stah) I can fall right back into the Boston accent.

That’s a Kennedy accent. Which is not, and never was, a Boston accent. John F’n Kerry is the only other guy who talks like that and he copied it on purpose.

Started visiting the ‘burgh in ‘06 from
Boston and enjoy it and yinzer talk and
slang (gumband, redd up, crick, an’ ‘at).

Youtube had videos of the publicity campaigns run by Westinghouse’s (now CBS) KDKA TV Pittsburgh (here’s 2) and Boston’s WBZ TV
(We’re 4).Same song, different lyrics and
localisms like “old Hahvid Yahd” and
“fishing the crick”

“The definitive movie re “Bahstin” accents would be The Departed (aka, The DePAHtid)”

DePAHtid is correct, since ar is pronounced ah. But we don’t turn o’s into ah’s. They get that wrong.
