PhD student Jennifer Applebaum from the Department of Sociology and Criminology at the University of Florida has been examining for several years the effect that pets have on their owners. Her initial findings focused on how people viewed their pets and how laws and policies may not be in line with these views.
Recently, however, her research revealed that having pets may actually help owners stave off memory loss and cognitive decline, WRAL reports. While the effect was most notable with dog and cat owners, pets such as birds, fish and other smaller animals also benefited their owners.
It's believed that interacting with pets can reduce stress levels, along with blood pressure, which may be the cause of the benefits to memory.
Pets also give their owners companionship and a sense of purpose.
Applebaum's research previously revealed, however, that while people feel attached to their pets, laws and regulations still view them as property. This can result in undue stress in certain situations.

We love our North American cat chasing hound. (Chihuahua). 12 cats next door and she keeps them out of our yard. Well worth the expensive kibble. 😉
Nobody could put up with the maintenance required if they weren't so d@mn cute.
Chichi the Cat Herder?
A co-worker advised getting cheap chicken and cooking it with rice. I buy big WM bags of rice and 10 lb. bags chicken legs. It’s comparable in price to store dog food and the dogs love it. A 10-gal pot of it lasts about 9 days for my 2 dogs. Costs less than $1/day.
Coco the destructor! The Cats jump into the little fenced area off our deck so they can stare into the chicken coop. We jokingly refer to it as the kill zone because if we open the door the dog is so fast she’s on them before the cat can get a running start to jump back over. She bowls them zzz over tea kettle a couple of times they usually manage to get away. If not we make her stop so they can drag themselves over the fence. 😆
Ouch!
I know they bring so much joy and love.
My Sammie was a Republican, LOL!!
My sister had a story. She was alone in the house, going through a divorce. I left on business. Lonely, she started crying. My mini-dachshund looked a her and barked—just once. That reaction fixed the problem.
I read that a dog sleeping with his human will synchronize his heartbeat. Amazing stuff!
I used to buy meat from the “old bin” at a discount and bring it home for our dogs. Husband would cook it lightly and then we’d mince it up.
Even though I go to the store early, those bins are now cleared out - and now I no longer see them.
that’s uh ... insane
