It isn’t necessary or even possible that real life has a clear dichotomy between the “good side” and the “bad side” in every conceivable conflict.
The Ukrainians and the Russians have a beef going way back. Criminals and oligarchs are involved. Ukrainian criminals, Western criminals and politicians, Russian criminals and oligarchs, are all in the mix. There would have been no NATO talk unless the Ukrainian leadership wanted it.
The Russians made a move and it appears the Ukrainians were ready to fight back.
A reflex of “we have to back NATO even though it aligned itself against Trump along with the rest of the deep state” is both wrong and not even applicable because NATO is not on the field against Russian forces.
With so little information at hand it’s hard to pick the winner which is best for the typical American in fly-over country (that’s me). So I just watch and try to understand what’s happening through the fog of war and fake media.
