I was hiking Windy Hill in Portola Valley, CA yesterday. Shortly after starting down, I heard a loud mix of howling, yipping, and barking from several coyotes. My first thought was mom had brought a fresh kill to her cubs. The noise lasted maybe a minute, then all was quiet again. I spotted four small rabbits on my hike in that area, so lots of food available. It seems rather early in the year for a litter of coyote pups, though. I was rather wary on that stretch of the hike after hearing that cacophony.
So this photo you posted struck a chord with me. I could just see mom teaching the kids like that.
Can’t go out on the porch at night without hearing a kill. Here’s some daytime action: https://youtu.be/JZsatKUm8Jc (25 secs.)
