I tend to believe the speculation that so far, Putin’s goal isn’t to destroy the Ukraine, but to destroy the Ukraine government and install a puppet regime like he did in Belarus.

Russia easily could go ‘scorched-earth’ on Ukraine by destroying power, communications, and water infrastructure and flatten the cities, but then they’d have to rebuild it all.

And most of Russia’s pipelines to Europe (and thus most of the source of Russia’s cash income) goes through the Ukraine. If Russia destroys the country’s power and communications grids, they are also shutting down their own source of money, and simultaneously lose the leverage they have over Europe.

I agree completely with your assessment. Putin is probably 5 steps ahead of the woke warriors in NATO and here as well. The leader of the free world is a senile old sock puppet that does whatever his wife and advisers tell him to. He intentionally gave the green light to Putin when he said that a “minor incursion” would be tolerated.
