An elderly woman behind the wheel was trying to parallel park but accelerated, sending the car barreling into patrons of Call Me Gaby in the South Beach section of Miami Beach just after 6 p.m., police said.

A child was among the injured, a witness told WPLG.

Photos of the scene shared to social media showed a large emergency response along busy Washington Avenue in the city’s South of Fifth neighborhood.

This is a reason to test older people more often.

Actually, the accident rate is a reason to test teenagers every year, too.

Eating on the sidewalk is a bad idea. If your homeless you might not have a lot of choices but.

There’s no real need to drive in South Beach. Traffic/parking is terrible and have an excellent bus system. That’s coming from me - someone who doesn’t like public busses.

Outdoor dining and recreation areas absolutely need pilings to protect patrons from cars.

Actually, the accident rate is a reason to test teenagers every year, too.

Plenty of teenagers can drive just fine when they are being tested, but differently in regular life. Auto insurance rates take it all into consideration. The DMV/MVD lines are long enough right now, thank you.

How about if you are grocery shopping for the week, or don't live on a bus route?

Good point about grocery shopping. However don’t recall grocery stores in that area. It’s mostly residential, high end shopping, and restaurants. Plus, Most grocery stores have a parking lot so parallel isn’t necessary. There’s are convenient bus stops everywhere in S beach. My point is - if you’ve been there - you’d see it’s just not necessary to use a car for going shopping or to eat lunch. In fact it’s more of a headache. Think nyc on the beach.

My mom really loved S Beach. It was cute. She loved the city. Liked the beach. But found the beach boring. So that’s how we started going to S Beach. We’d stayed in condos in that general area.

That could have been my m-i-l.

She had an accident on a very busy spring break day that miraculously did not injure anyone but herself. We managed to keep her from driving after that but it wasn’t easy.

My Mother took 2 accidents and at the Sr. Living Apartments: a Parking Block, 10’ of grass, 3 shrubs, 1 A/C unit and a window with a few bricks. All with the same car over a 2-3 year period.

My Sister and Brother (both are My elder) wimped out on telling Mom She couldn’t drive anymore and left the job to Me. I simply called Mom and told Her that She may not drive anymore and told Her why.

She said that she understood.

I still don’t know what the big deal was in telling her.

Howie Carr used to joke about “Q-tips”,
elderly drivers. Now he’s 70 himself.

My dad passed away in 2014 at age 93. He
lost his license some years before as he
flunked eye test. Probably aphasia (sp.?)
which is an inability to correctly associate letters when seen. I was in doc’s office for his followup and he was
way off.

Sopranos: early episode had Tony’s mom
Livia driving another elderly woman home.
The other woman gets run over by Livia when she goes forward instead of reverse, injuries to both...

Just how old was she? What is being considered elderly nowadays?

My Dad passed away in 2015 at age 89.
6 years previous to that. he was backing up behind
a garden center - his foot slipped off the brake pedal
and onto the gas.

The Chevy rapidly accelerated - in reverse - into a
flatbed tractor trailer.

No one, including himself, was hurt. The trailer was
undamaged - the Chevy was totaled.

Dad voluntarily, immediately, turned over his D.L. - and
he thanked God that he didn't kill or hurt anyone.
He never drove after that.

I am thankful that he didn't put up any fuss at all
about his license, and initiated relinquishing it.

Make no mistake - he HATED no longer driving and having
to rely on me and Mom - but he realized it was necessary.

He was cognitively 'with it' until the end - thank goodness.

Aphasia is the loss of the ability to speak and/or understand speech.
