Spoken like a man who never thought deeply about the history of his own country. Lincoln famously said that he would preserve the union with slavery if he could. In other words he would’ve allowed slavery to continue if the south would simply return to the union peacefully. This is your hero, not mine.
Lincoln called for the passage of the "Corwin Amendment". (in his first inaugural address.) This amendment would have made slavery permanent in the US.
His concern was not slavery, it was loss of economic control over the Southern states which were producing approximately 72% of all the revenues for the government at that time.
Even worse, the loss of control over the trade of the Southern states would have economically devastated his powerful wealthy supporters in the Northeast.
