A woman had her scalp torn off by a Brentwood police dog after she shoplifted thousands of dollars from a nearby mall, video obtained by KTVU shows, raising serious questions about when and why K-9 units are deployed.
Talmika Bates, then 24, is seen in the video provided by her lawyers screaming and wailing in pain. The skin on top of her head was ripped off exposing blood and bone.
"Help me! The dog is biting me," she screams. "My whole brain is bleeding!"
The police officer in the video responds: "We're going to help you…but you shouldn't run from the police."
Bates talked about her painful recovery in an interview with KTVU on Wednesday.
"I really thought I was going to die," she said. "I really didn’t think that I was going to be able to tell this story and really explain to noboody. It’s just traumatizing. It's just sad."
She said she was taken directly to jail after doctors sewed her scalp back on at John Muir hospital in Walnut Creek. She said her hair still doesn't grow around her wounds.
"I feel ugly," she said. "I get miserable I get depressed. I'm not happy with myself. I don’t even feel cute."

I’m really sorry you are offended by the truth. I’m a believer in the old saying that the punishment should fit the crime. Having your scalp chewed off by a mangy dog for stealing is a bit much. May I remind you again of the RCMP’s treatment of peaceful protesters in Canada. Also remember our brave police taking knees and showing solidarity with BLM and Antifa. Isn’t it amazing how quickly some here will grovel on the ground and proceed to lick the boots of oppressors...last I knew, police weren’t judge, jury, and executioners too. The right to due process, including the prohibition of cruel and unusual punishment, as well as torture, by the state, belongs to everyone if it belongs to anyone.

Sending a police dog after an unarmed suspect is basically the same as if they were shooting at her with their pistol. Those dogs can easily disfigure, cripple, or kill whomever they attack.
Repeatedly they told her to come out...many many times.....she calls her mom on her cell phone telling her the dogs attacking her......what a stupid converstion while the police are trying to get her out of the thicket. She’ll be suing but won’t win.....

And as far as the dog goes, if it can’t be controlled and prevented from doing this kind of damage, it should be euthanized and the handler terminated.

They used to hang people from the nearest tree for stealing a horse. Counterfeiting used to be a capital crime. That was rough treatment. Nobody is suggesting the perpetrator face that kind of treatment but neither is she going to get sympathy that the law of unintended consequences caught up with her. She’ll survive.

This happened 2 years ago. I watched the video and the idiot thief was on the phone to her mother when the cops caught up with her. She repeatedly didn’t listen to the cop’s directions as she took her sweet time emerging from the bushes. She wasn’t complaining about her hair/head at any point on the video. She’s had 2 years to fashion her version of events which don’t correspond to the cop’s body cam. And to compare a felony theft to the “mischief” charges in Canada is a long stretch.
