In my SCUBA training I was taught the best way to avoid sharks and Orcas is to not look like a seal and stay on the bottom.

A friend of mine in Alaska was an avid sea kayaker but the sea lions wouldn't leave him alone - 700 lb. juveniles getting right in his face while paddling.
He painted the bottom of his kayak to look like the belly of a killer whale, which scared off the sea lions but attracted orcas instead. He finally moved up to a cabin cruiser.
