The colonists had guns. The Chinese under the CCP rule don’t. They tried standing up to the CCP. The response from the government was the slaughter at Tiananmen.

You evidently mistake Mainland China for some western style government.
People that speak up are mercilessly beaten by the Peoples Armed Police (a division of the Ministry of State Security), forcibly dragged from their homes, and disappeared - often never to be seen again. This is the lesson of Tiananmen Square - where at least 10,000 people who spoke up and stood up were murdered by the PLA, their bodies crushed, burned, and washed down the sewer.
