The move threatens to plunge Libya back to the split between two warring, parallel administrations that governed from 2014 until a unity government was installed last year as part of a U.N.-backed peace plan.

A spokesman for the parliament said it had chosen former interior minister Fathi Bashagha by a show of hands after the only other candidate withdrew.

The parliament wants to take control of Libya's political future after the collapse of an election that was planned for December, saying Dbeibah's interim government is no longer valid and pushing any new election back until next year.

The destruction of Libya is just one of the many disasters the world is still dealing with from the Obama/Clinton years.

Libya has more honest elections than the USA. When is the corrupt UN gonna send peace keepers to America?

I can’t understand why Libya is not allowed to return to its historical antecedents. From Roman times through the Italian occupation of Libya the country was divided into three parts: Tripolitania, Cyrenaica and southernmost Libya, or Sebha. Let Tripoli fester in its own Islamist juice. Form a second parliament in Benghazi and let Cyrenaica make the effort to incorporate the homeland of the Sanoussi (Sufi) brotherhood, and the remnant of those who still support the family of King Idris. Economically, both elements would have oil fields they could use to finance their states. As for Sebha; let the UN hold a plebiscite. Either that or arm the savages and let them kill each other off.
