That is not true after the red wedding, the characters and plots were extremely different in GoT TV show vs book. But again, most people watching haven't read the books and a large portion of those that have won't care if they take liberties as long as they like what was done.

The plot in books became completely incomprehensible as GRRM tried to figure out how to fit 1500 more characters into him timelines and plot...
The TV series was better. Even with the lame ending.
