The youngest of the U.S. women's single competitors, 16-year-old Alysa Liu, was raised by a single father from Sichuan Province, who had participated in the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests that were violently suppressed by the Chinese government. He fled to the U.S., where he became an attorney in California's Bay Area.
Among the biggest stars of the U.S. figure skating team is 22-year-old Nathan Chen, who has won three straight world championships. While Chen was born and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah, his mother hails from Beijing, and he remembers his family taking him to the Chinese capital as a child.
At the 2018 Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea, Chen's free-skate program was set to music from "Mao's Last Dancer," a film about a ballet dancer born during the Great Leap Forward who defected from China...
Karen Chen, who placed fourth in the 2021 world championships, is of Taiwanese descent, and ice dancer Madison Chock has Chinese roots.

Having “tiger moms” helps succeed in figure skating. It requires huge amounts of time, discipline, and focus. As an individual sport, its a similar focus as with academic success.
Its also expensive! the best figure skates cost $2000/pair, but that is nothing compared to ice rental, coaches fees, and travel.
I was more interested in the pro-freedom narratives of some of their families... :)
I was in a restaurant the other night where they had the Olympics on the tv.

I swear, these kids couldn’t skate. They were great and doing gay arm waving, but they skated like they had bricks in their pantlegs.
I couldn’t believe it was the “Olympics”.
I don’t know about the others, but Nathan Chen is amazing and masculine without being macho. Loved the Elton John medley:

I enjoyed his performance as well. He deserved the gold.
