“Sounds like an excellent plan.”
Hate the guy, but then you have the ‘conservatives’ in Germany taking that country back to it’s Barbarian days.
” France has always been willing to sell electricity to Germany, for a suitably high price”
The spot market will go through the roof on electricity, as it often does now when solar/wind isn’t producing. France is very wise to have excess capacity to sell at those times.
More nukes, less kooks.
“It sounds like the US ought to hire the French nuclear regulatory agency to approve and supervise a new fleet of nuclear reactors in the US.”
I’d take them, as I suspect our Narcs aren’t really interested in promoting nuke power, instead just driving up the cost.
“He has shouted down the Muslim immigrants in France and basically told them to assimilate or leave.”
It’s a funny country, there. Mitterrand was a ‘Socialist’ also, but was closer to Reagan, and supported his policies in the heat of the Cold War more than anyone else in Europe, other than Thatcher.
I didn’t think France was a large enough country to build 14 reactors.
My first thoughts as well. But my next one is who is going to run them? The radicalized children of todays radical muslims that have invaded France?
I’ve always admired the French approach to atomic energy.
Yeah right lol!-)
Dec 17, 2021 — France’s EDF takes more nuclear reactors offline
French power giant EDF said on Wednesday it had found faults on pipes in a safety system at its Civaux nuclear power station, ...
Spent fuel is only “waste” because of the politics in the USA. The advanced nuclear powers reprocess spent fuel into more fuel as 96% of spend fuel is still fuel. What remains as fission products all but three have half lives under 100 years and will ne back to background radiation levels in under 1000 years or less depending on the burn up level and reactors spectrum. The actinidies elements heavier than uranium which are created by neutron capture have very long half lives fortunately every one of those is excellent fuel for a fast spectrum reactor. Do I qualify as sciency with three master’s and a PhD all in hard sciences none of that MA or applied sciences junk.
France currently has 56 reactors , 17 of them are down with once in a lifetime technical issues steming from a bad weld design. They at one point got up to 85% of their total power from nuclear energy with a closed fuel cycle as they recycle all their spent fuel into more fuel or PU239 to be used to kickstart fast reactors which humanity will need very soon. Natural uranium resources for a once through throw away cycle will be depleted in less than 40 years if the world doubles nuclear energy. At that point you have to go breed reactors or mine the oceans for uranium. Less than 1% of the energy in natural uranium is used in a USA PWR reactor on a once through throw away cycle compare that to 99% in a fast reactor with reprocessing technology Americans invented and perfected in the 1950s&60s the first reactor to put power on the grid was a fsst reactor with integrated processing of fuel. We used to lead the world Carter thag traitor ended that and has crippled the American nuclear industry every since. I personally cannot wait to piss on his grave.
Thanks for the info. Yes, very sciencey indeed.
