Brad Marchand of the Boston Bruins was suspended six games for roughing and high-sticking by the NHL Department of Player Safety on Wednesday.
The incident occurred with 25 seconds remaining in the third period of a 4-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins at TD Garden on Tuesday. Marchand received a minor penalty for roughing on the play and a match penalty for attempt to injure.
"I just think, same as last night, 'Marsh' just has to have control of his emotions in that situation," Bruins coach Bruce Cassidy said Wednesday. "Live to fight another day, get ready for the next game, and unfortunately (it) got the best of him.
"I wasn't on the ice. But still, you shouldn't go after the goaltender in that situation unless you were pushed into the crease or he sticks you first, which I did not see. Could have happened, but I don't think it did."
This is the eighth time that Marchand has been suspended during his NHL career, including the second time this season. He was suspended three games for slew-footing Vancouver Canucks defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson on Nov. 29.
The six games is the longest suspension for Marchand, who had been suspended for five games on two prior occasions (for clipping Vancouver Canucks defenseman Sami Salo on Jan. 9, 2012, and elbowing New Jersey Devils forward Marcus Johansson on Jan. 24, 2018). He has also been fined five times and has forfeited more than $1.4 million in salary from his previous fines and suspensions, including $448,170.72 on this occasion.
"This one, yes, he lost his discipline," Cassidy said. "No doubt. We'll sit down. … We've had our share of sit-downs over the years. I think Brad's been doing a pretty good job for the most part with controlling his emotions."
Marchand leads Boston with 49 points (21 goals, 28 assists) in 39 games. He will be eligible to return at the Seattle Kraken on Feb. 24.
Back in my day, once Marchand comes off his suspension he will be forced to stay on the ice and the next shift the opponents enforcer lines up against him. And Marchand will take his punishment.
Dirty hits have consequences.
I don’t see anything in that video that would explain why Marchand snapped. Six games is light, especially for someone with history.
Styrofoam hockey sticks with sponge and cotton fluff blades are next...
Thanks for correcting me.
I’m from Boston and have been a Bruins fan since I was old enough to skate...wearing Life magazines wrapped around my shins and taped in place. So...those were the first two examples that came to mind.
Just yanking your chain. :D
No worries. And I have always loved your tagline. I quote it often.

LOL!
Typical Rat Marchand.
Damn I miss old time hockey! Imagine what would happen if someone tried to do that to Bernie Parent! I say tried because no one, esp. the likes of Rat Marchand would’ve had the balls!
On the reply “Cindy” Crosby was right there, pretty much alone with him in the corner (just after Marchand took the right-swipe at Jarry’s head). If Cindy wasn’t such a p*ssy, he’d have taken care of business right there. (And that’s coming from a guy that can’t stand Marchand!)
