Gu was likely paid to compete for China, who do not allow dual citizenship, so Gu is theoretically no longer a US citizen.

Nope. China allows it through age 18. The second Gu turns 19, she will have to choose. She would be nuts not to keep the American citizenship, which I expect she will.

Gu gets curiouser and curiouser. From Breitbart.

Chinese state media claims Gu became a naturalized subject of the Chinese Communist government three years ago, a transition that would have required renouncing her American citizenship, since China does not recognize dual citizenships.

Canada’s Globe and Mail observed over the weekend that China’s team includes some foreign players who apparently were not required to become Chinese citizens.

The South China Morning Post reported last week that some online Chinese nationalists are worried that Gu might have been granted some extraordinary dual citizenship arrangement, or that she might be insufficiently loyal to China. .....“ Her name is not on the list of people who have given up U.S. citizenship on the Federal Register, foreign media reported that she has dual citizenship.

I'll bet some exception has been or will be granted to claim glory for China. Rules, rules...mere inconveniences.
