I have noticed that numerous moderates are moving rightward as primary season approaches. In Texas, Greg Abbott, who was in trouble due to the effects of the February 2021 deep freeze and hostility toward the statewide COVID lockdown, has moved rightward, sounding tough on border issues. Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich, who did nothing about voter fraud despite abundant evidence from Maricopa County, has denounced Biden's mishandling of border issues.

Another moderate tactic is tilting at the likely Democrat opponent in the general election. Abbott has been running anti-Beto O'Rourke commercials, and Ivey is making nice/nasty "bless your heart" comments against Biden, who of course is not on the primary or general election ballots.
