Not sure what the problem is here. There are trillions upon trillions of virions of Covid around. There were far fewer flu viruses. We had something like 50,000 flu deaths in a year(flu season) in a typical year.
Covid kills over 10X that. All over the world.
There are nearly 8 billion people in the world. Plenty of opportunities for it to mutate. Instead of 50,000 annual flu deaths, we'll have to deal with 500,000 annual covid deaths. Millions of Americans turn 65 every year.
We thought that this thing might follow the pattern of the Spanish flu. But it's not looking that way so far.
And this is before the Omicron. What we've seen with previous variants, we will probably see another one pop up in 6-11 months from now to displace Omicron.
