The defendant, in a light-blue shirt, showed no emotion as the jury's sentence was announced Saturday afternoon following victim impact statements.
The jury heard from relatives of the four people who were killed. The four victims were all under 30 years old.
The two fatally shot outside the restaurant in Antioch, southeast of downtown Nashville, were Waffle House employee Taurean C. Sanderlin, 29, and customer Joe R. Perez, 20.
Inside, the gunman killed two more people: 23-year-old Akilah DaSilva, a student pursuing a musical engineering career, and 21-year-old DeEbony Groves, a college senior majoring in social work who had been out with her sorority sisters that night.
Patricia Perez said her son would have been 24 this year. He had just moved to Nashville to help his brother start a business.
Shaundelle Brooks, DaSilva's mother, said she wakes up every day and realizes her "baby is gone."
She drove to the Waffle House after the shooting. She recognized her son's shoes as he lay in an ambulance. She called out his name three times. He didn't answer, she said.
Her son was an aspiring rapper and a "little genius" who built his own computer.
The shooting ended when customer James Shaw Jr., who had been sitting with a friend at the restaurant counter, wrestled the weapon away from the gunman, who fled on foot.

In this country’s current instability, “life without parole” is no guarantee that a future state government, even in Tennessee, will release him. If not, the Feds may determine that there was some civil rights violation and require his release via a friendly Federal judge.
If he’s still in jail 5 years from now, I’ll buy the mayor a beer.
My grandfather once said that a state is not doing it’s job if it isn’t executing one murderer per day. My grandfather was right.
What a creep. May he rot slowly and painfully in jail.
WTF is a musical engineering career?
No hash browns for you!!

Usually Sound Recording Engineer.
Usually Sound Recording Engineer.
I was wondering why CNN was not making lame excuses for the killer. Then I saw the killer was White.
Do us all a favor and put him out of our misery.
“WTF is a musical engineering career? “
Actually it is a very wise, insightful degree anticipating ‘Soul Train’ redux.
I’m guessing it means working the sound booth or a loud speaker system (which can be complex and involve a lot of voltage) and maybe assembling and maintaining the associated systems.
More “Sanitation Engineer” than Mechanical Engineer.
Probably learns how to DJ and Mix.
I’m pretty sure a Musical Engineering degree doesn’t require Calculus, like every other real Engineering degree.
but, the shooter should still fry.
And some of us built them using kits from Heathkit. Like the H11 (DEC LSI-11 16-bit processor). Or the paper tape reader/punch!
Bring back the gallows.
Why the lenient sentence? He deserves the d.p. if anyone ever has.
