When I was young, my voicemail was the famous sound clip from WW2 movies of incoming MP40 fire. Between the burst, I frantically yelled “ Can’t talk now!...Kinda busy!”

I don’t see anything wrong with her voicemail greeting.

I don’t like the tone of the guy who left the message. Looks like she might have dodged a bullet.

People who randomly lecture others about phone etiquette that isn’t even their own phone etiquette need different hobbies.

Yeah, immature but pretty harmless for a PERSONAL phone
No obscenities
I’ve heard worse in music played while on-holc
Not likely to be her work phone

No, “professional” means using standard English without vernacular or slang. It shouldn’t be difficult to understand that, and if it is, it is a red flag to any employer.

Have you never been to the South?

I spent a total 15 years stationed in AR, MS, and AL while in the military. When I first got to each location, I couldn't understand anybody.

PROFESSIONALLY, I would expect hiring managers to understand the difference between a personal voice mail and a business phone when making hiring decisions.

No, and it was incoherent to boot.

I could not make out a word of it.

That’s what professional means now. Miserable. I’ve worked for too many companies that required employees be miserable humorous drones. Never again.

100%. You mean “humorless”. And I agree

How about telling her AND hiring her?

Or is it now considered “professional” to refuse to hire someone because your personal voicemail was too personal?!

Love it. Back when politics was fun I did impersonations of presidential candidates answering the phone for me.

haha...my voicemail got me a job once. I recorded a message on my answering machine once. I played a loud sound effect on my stereo of a bunch of chickens having a fit. At the same time I had my daughter yelling things like "shoo" and "get out of here". This worked our dog up so much that she started barking. I then hit the recording and said in a southern voice "I'm sorry I can't get to the phone right now...those dang chickens got in the house again...shoo....get out of here....leave a message and I'll call back as soon as we get things sorted out here...."

Sounded perfect. Sounded like the real thing. Got a job interview about a week later. Got the job and after I got the job they told me that before they hired me that everyone crowded around a couple of times and listened to my answering machine message and knew someone that creative had to be hired.

No. Nor need you listen. A mouthful of mush and she thinks she is so very cute.
The hiring manager was doing her a favor, but society’s immaturity will win out. It always does anymore.

>>> “Why does everything we do need to be ‘professional’ for work like that’s our only purpose in life?” asked Jessica Metzler. <<<

Agreed. My current job has repeatedly tried to insinuate themselves into my private life with oblique inquiries about my personal politics, my views on abortion, and with the stay-at-home orders of the past two years they’ve repeatedly tried to insist that they have a right to inspect my home.

This one evil b*tch from HR went so far as to come to my house unannounced demanding that I open my locked gate and let her in to ‘inspect’ my home office for ergonomic reasons. I told her no and she pitched a hissy fit.

After letting her go into ‘Berserker Karen’ mode for a good five minutes I calmly pointed out my home surveillance cameras and explained how I would be posting the video on You Tube is she or anyone else ever bothered me at home again.

No problems since.

Did you go to view/listen? The profile pic of this person alone is a red flag if you’re looking for “professional” demeanor.

But really, the employer (Harris Teeter) is apparently a grocery store. Not IBM of the single dress code days and not even white collar millennial IT startup. Hourly grocery work. Horses for courses.

(FWIW my VM greeting is whatever the generic thing is. If someone actually wants to reach me by *talking*, just get it over with; cute messages went out with the days of rotary phones IMO).

It does involve setting the ebonics aside and reserving it for use when one is around one’s friends and family.

I had a black psychologist tell me he does just that, and recommends it.

I’m not randomly lecturing anyone. I am commenting on a posted article, just the same as you were.

I saw this when we lived in Hawaii. The haoles who were born and raised there spoke perfect English in business situations. But when around their old friends and other locals, their pidgin was perfect, too.
