Interesting,,,speaking of moot points...I know this old German guy who describes how when he was a teenager, the SS came to his village and were looking for kids to fight to stop the allied advance from the west. He and a lot of others hid out in the hills (Odenwald) and resisted the fanatic freaks. Would be nice to have a map of those!
Yes, such cases did exist, although not everywhere. Other SS simply ran away to save their own skins or surrendered, for better or worse. Regular army units were often reported to negotiate partial surrenders.
Remember Gen. Patton, who gave his word to all German units in Southern Bavaria in April of 45 that everybody who surrendered would be spared: a dear late friend of mine, who was a German Army sergeant, was able to live through the war because of him, and he and his comrades held Gen. Patton and his soldiers in the highest regard throughout their lives.
My friend passed away three years ago, at the age of 95, peacefully in his sleep - as he, a deeply religious man, had always been praying for, and he was so grateful for the good life he had had (the only thing he was sorry for was that his wife turned out to be infertile).
