Trekking California’s Mysterious Bigfoot Trail
San Jose Mercury News ^ | February 2, 2022 | Elliott Almond

They’re out there. Shadowy creatures of the night making mischief, or worse, under the cover of darkness. These magnified legends have wormed their way into the subconscious, propelling legions of seekers to swarm dense North American forests in search of Bigfoot.

Ken Carter of Martinez has never seen one. But he says he has had close encounters — red eyes eerily glowing in the woods that he swears could not have been an animal. He has heard grunting and stomping in his campsite and once found a big handprint where something smacked the camper shell in the wee hours, startling him awake.

These unexplained occurrences took place over the years at a secretive Sierra hunting ground in Stanislaus National Forest. That’s where Carter stood with fellow East Bay searcher Rich Mingus on a recent brisk fall afternoon. Among the camping accoutrements they brought along was “Stenny,” a Bigfoot doll named for fellow searcher Mark Stenberg, whose health no longer allows him to camp with the gang.

The men embody a cabalistic pursuit of the paranormal that, for a sliver of Americans, has morphed into a pastime as addictive as golf.

Carter, 64, has searched for the famed hominid since 2012, when he and a daughter spent their Sundays watching Animal Planet’s “Finding Bigfoot,” one of the many shows the legendary beast has inspired.

“We can’t say there is something or there isn’t something,” said Carter, who published “Cancer & Bigfoot, My Story” in 2021. “Just different things happen that make you think there is something.”

Been reading about Bigfoot over the years. I have some interest in mysteries and the unexplained. Can make for a good read. Would like to believe Bigfoot is real. Would be a hell of a discovery but gotta find some real evidence.

I watched a show that was about a remote cabin got attacked by a bigfot. It left blood on a board with a nail. DNA tested it. Result was no known animal; seemed human yet primate too...

Go figure...

I love it on the Finding Bigfoot when the actors claim that a loud yell is proof that there’s a big foot around even when they’ve never seen one. So, if they’ve never seen on, how do they know what they sound like.

An even better show is about the Vampire Hunters. Caught a bit of it this morning where they claim there are hundreds of thousands of vampires currently stalking America.

All of these are scripted reality shows where the producer writes a script to attract viewers rather than reflect reality.

” I have some interest in mysteries and the unexplained.”

Look up MojaveMyteries on Youtube by M.L. Behrman. I just bought one of his books and the guy does a lot of research.

With all the hunters out there, you would have thought one of them would have bagged a bigfoot by now.

I was thinking of setting up a small shack along that trail where I would sell barbecued snipe on a stick.

I first heard of BigFoot in the mid-60’s, there was a big flap over sightings. My Granddad lived on an isolated ranch in Texas and I asked him one day if he had ever heard or seen anything about such a creature. He answered matter-of-factly as if talking about a mountain lion or any other unusual animal sighting in his area.

Paraphrased: “Used to see one every once a while, but haven’t seen one since the 30’s. We called them Skunk Apes because you smelled them more than you saw them. They really had a stink.”

Another interesting story came from a Forest Ranger in Colorado perhaps 30 years ago. He reported finding one very large human-type footprint on the bank of a creek. He said he couldn’t imagine any faker bothering to put one track in such an isolated spot where the chance of anyone finding it was one-in-a million as it was in gravel/mud on the bank of a small creek 5 miles from any road and not near any trail.

Two Apaches, mother and daughter, I knew, saw one in Texas in 1970s. They were so scared they moved to California, which didnt help much.

I’m doubting Bigfoot exists. There have always been plenty of reports of sightings and when the personal phone with built in n camera became ubiquitous I felt tired pic must start turning up. But no. No pics. Additionally there are no shit hunters and trackers in this world who don’t need to get anywhere near or lay eyes on their objective animal to be absolutely certain it is out there somewhere. Put ten tigers out into those vast forest places and you may never so much as catch a glimpse of them. But a tracker would know they were out there somewhere.

Same here. I would like to believe Bigfoot is real. If it did exist, you would think we would by now have solid photo and film evidence by with everyone having a cell phone these days.

On the other hand, there have been so many reports of sightings going back to the 1800’s. All these people were lying or wrong about what they saw? Many of the reports of seeing a Bigfoot are clearly BS or a case of someone not understanding what they saw. But some sightings do seem credible from reliable people.

The funny thing is- they aren’t the only ‘bigfoot hunters’ out in the woods- so you have two groups of hunters on different ridges, shooting like drunken boobs back and forth to each other exclaiming it’s proof of big foot lol

[[All of these are scripted reality shows]]

Yup- some folks who worked on that show state that they knew a man on a ridge was not a bigfoot, but they were ordered to “Chase after it’ and act like it was- they spill the beans on other instances too-

Steve Isdahl has been a pro big game guide in British Columbia for the last 35 years and has seen bigfoot twice and has much to say on the topic.

Listen to Art Bell’s interview with ‘Elaine’ and how she has a Bigfoot living in her back yard.

This show made me for once think...maybe.

Btw, Art has passed. You will never find another radio host and interviewer like this guy. He’s more than amazingly good.

Enjoy :)

Snipe tastes very good barbecued but since they are a game bird it is against the law to sell.
