Commander is two ranks below General.

Actually, Commander is a Navy rank and is one rank below Captain. There are five levels of Admiral above Captain. In the Army, the equivalent rank to a Commander is a Lt. Colonel.

Keep it simple. Commander is O-5. Brigadier General is O-7. That is two steps.
