Prosecutors have dropped charges against a Missouri high school teacher after she married the student she was accused of having sex with.
In February 2019, former Sarcoxie High School teacher Baylee A. Turner, 26, was charged with having sexual contact with one of her male students following an investigation by the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department, the Joplin Globe reported.
Turner, then 23 years old, was a first-year English teacher at the high school when she was accused of having sexual intercourse with a student in January 2019, leading to her resignation.
According to court documents, both Turner and the student acknowledged that they had sex at Turner's home in Sarcoxie, about 260 miles southwest of St. Louis.
Turner taught English at the Sarcoxie middle school for two years before being assigned to teach high school sophomores and seniors in 2019.
Assistant prosecutor Nate Dally told the Globe that the charge against her was being dismissed after she married the student, whose identity has not been revealed.
Dally said that because the former student now has marital or spousal privilege, he can no longer be compelled to testify against his wife, weakening the state’s case in court.
Turner was facing up to four years in prison.

This has happened before. A teacher’s young student actually got her pregnant. They got married after she served time and had another child.
And you might all want to check the love life of current French President Macron, whose wife was his high school teacher.
So that even applies to events that occur prior to the marriage.
Interesting way of getting out of having to testify or having incriminating evidence against you being brought up in court from prior to the fact.
Dragging their feet to bring the case to trial lead to this.
This seems basackwards. It’s been a long time ago but didn’t guys marry girls to keep out jail or go to the barber and he’d cut your throat?

I think that particular teacher died of cancer a couple of years ago. What a horrible story that all was.

Is it something they are putting in food as an additive? They didn’t make teachers like this when I went to school.
Sure, we can make educated guesses.
But it would have been better if the article had explicitly noted the age of the male student at the time of the first sexual encounter.
He might have been 19. He might have been 16.
That matters.

Yes the teacher-student thing is a big NO-NO and inexcusable.
However beyond that and above the age of consent, I don’t think there should be a double standard about large age gap relationships. So what if the woman is the older one.
Since the article does not mention the age of the student then he must have been of legal age.
