ATikTok video has gone viral after an antique store was caught selling a brass swan trio for $220 that had a Goodwill tag on it for $8.99. The viral video has garnered over 2 million views in just four days.
TikToker @angelmunoz90, or Angel Munoz, posted the video to the social media platform with the caption, "#brass #thiftshop #thriftstore #thriftstorefinds #bruh #pricegouging #swan." The short 20-second clip began with the TikToker walking down a checkered path, revealing he was walking around in a thrift store.
Then he walked up to a trio of brass swans on the ground. "Oh look, there's a brass swan," he said. He checked the price tag of one, which revealed the price for the "brass swan family," which included all three, was $220 in total.
Then the TikToker flipped the same brass swan over while saying, "Well I bet it has a cool history or something, or like it was hand-made...Or they bought it from Goodwill for $8.99." On the bottom of the swan is an $8.99 price tag with Goodwill's name on it. The TikToker put the swan down, saying, "Nevermind."

The viral TikTok has 194,000 likes and over 1,700 comments. The content has ignited a debate among viewers.
A lot of people don't seem happy about the discovery. A TikToker revealed "this is why" they "don't thrift anymore."
One TikToker didn't mince words about their feelings. "Resellers are destroying most hobbies and markets right now," they said.
Another person simply wondered, "Why didn't they at least take the tag off?"
Others had comments like, "And just like that, I'd walk out," and "It's called greed, bottom line."

I was at a local Salvation Army supercenter thrift store and found some good deals on some Allen Edmonds men’s shoes. They were virtually new and retail for $220 but picked up three pair for like $12.50 each. I’m going to list them online and hope to get at least $100 each. I’ll sleep well at night.
That’s not illegal, and to top it off, it may not even be correct. I’m sure there are a ton of $8.99 stickers.

We have a friend who bought a Picasso at a garage sale when she was 17. It isn’t much to look at, but it *is* a Picasso!
At least a brass swan for $220 dollars is a real item. It’s better than the people spending thousands on NFTs that don’t even exist except as bits.
Not easy making money in antiques— prices are going down everywhere and some stuff can’t be given away.
Plus rent, overhead, insurance, shrinkage, etc..
Something scare can be sold for whatever the market will bear.

This happens all of the time. In my hobbies, I’ve seen items you might toss in the garbage go for four figures on shopgoodwill.com. Some people at Goodwill have sharp eyes/expert knowledge of some types of items.
And if they bought a 10 dollar item from this shop and sold it for a thousand.

Horrors! I heard of someone buying Bitcoin for like $0.03 a decade ago and now are selling it for $36,000!!!! The nerve!
The shop owner’s critics would probably gladly pay $200 or more for a ticket to some music concert.
Goodwill and places like that deliberately price things low so poor people can afford them. Things like wooden dressers for $15 (instead of $350), table+4chairs for $10, ...
If Goodwill asked $9 for the swans, then $220 is likely a fair price.

What is the true value of this piece? Does the potential buyer know? It could in fact be an authentic antique worth $220 or more. That Goodwill didn't know and under-valued it doesn't mean it's not worth $220. Research needs to be done. Did it come from Pier 1 or was it made in the early 1800's?
Come to think of it, I personally bought something maybe 10 years ago at a Goodwill store that is worth on eBay maybe 50 times what I paid for it. I didn’t and don’t feel guilty about it at all. OTOH, we donate several hundred dollars worth of good clothing a year to them. So, in the big picture, it’s all good.
I have just remembered that I think I HAVE a set of 2 brass swans. I am going to have to have them appraised, I guess. They are about 6” tall and 4” tall.
