General Robert E. Lee assumes the post of General in Chief of the Armies of the Confederate States. He will hold this position until April 9, 1865
There was a huge snow storm in Boone Iowa also.
Yesterday C-SPAN was re-showing some Civil War talks held in Gettysburg on 11/18/2021. Gary Gallagher gave a very interesting talk about Gettysburg (explaining why he does not accept the common notion that it was the “turning point” in the war). Of course a lot of his analysis had to do with Robert E. Lee. It was running at the same time as the Bengals-Chiefs game.
I would agree with Gallagher. Within a few months Lee’s army had largely recovered from the losses of men and material suffered at Gettysburg. This put it in the same strategic position that it had occupied in June of 1863. IMO Grant’s capture of Vicksburg delt far greater damage to the Confederate war effort than Meade’s victory at Gettysburg.
Too little too late.
akin to closing the barn door after the horses have run away.
Geographically it split the Confederacy in two and it gave the North control of the Mississippi River. For some eighty years after the war the city of Vicksburg didn't celebrate July 4th. which was the day the city surrendered to Union forces.
