Rafael Nadal broke a three-way tie with Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic by claiming his 21st Grand Slam title Sunday, coming back to beat Daniil Medvedev, 2-6, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-4, 7-5, in the 2022 Australian Open men's singles final.
Nadal rallied from two sets down -- just the third comeback from 0-2 at a major for Nadal in his career -- to win the marathon five-setter.
Nadal, 35, along with Federer and Djokovic make up the generation-defining Big Three that has dominated the professional circuit for well over a decade now. With Nadal's 2022 Australian Open championship, the second of his storied career, he breaks the Grand Slam record that he, Djokovic and Federer held in a tie at 20 titles each. Djokovic, 34, lost his bid to compete in this year's Australian Open as an unvaccinated player after he was denied by government officials.
In 2019, Federer had match points against Djokovic at the Wimbledon final to reach Grand Slam No. 21 but fell short. In 2021, Djokovic lost to Medvedev at the US Open final in straight sets, also falling short of reaching 21.

Meant a new sport goes by the wayside every year for me. Boycotting Tennis which I used to sporadically follow.
Nice Australian Closed Participation Trophies those boyos have there...
“are what’s known in the software world as “vaporware”.
Ah, I see the problem. Your confused, you thought you were watching an Xbox Tennis World tour demo.
Permanent asterisk next to “21”.
*You’re
That there "Participation Trophy" is real swell.
How do you say “Barry Bonds” in Australian?
You really don’t get it.
We protected our borders.
You’re the last person I would have expected us to do anything else.
I will never be ashamed of my country maintaining its sovereignty on any issue, big or small.
And if Americans have lost that, then your country is doomed.
As I've said...and I hope you believe it...I do love, and respect,Australia and her people. Well,*most* of her people. Because of that respect I view this whole thing with sadness, rather than anger or disdain, because a great nation has been made to look foolish here.
And BTW....for the record,I most assuredly *do* understand that more than a few of *our* current "leaders" are guilty of wrongs far,far worse than anything that the Australian official(s) responsible for this have committed. As far as I can see there's no shortage of clowns to be found in positions of authority in any Western nation you could name.
Just sayin'...
An exception might have been able to be made before he entered the country.
Understand that there is every possibility that if he, or Tennis Australia, with the internal exemption granted by Victoria in hand (an exemption to move around Victoria - not one to enter the country) had approached the Commonwealth government and asked for an exemption, one might have been granted. But that isn't what happened. Instead, he turned up at the border without an exemption.
Once he tried to enter without valid permission, any realistic option to enter the country was gone.
I think you've accepted a very inaccurate and biased version of what happened.
He attempted to enter Australia without valid documentation. We don't 'fix' that at the border.
It wasn't entirely his fault - Tennis Australia does seem to have lied to him. But that is a private company and blaming the rest of Australia for what those morons did is ridiculous.
I think the USA is lost and unrecoverable....I hope not. With borders open on the south, how many illegal immigrants and terrorists have already come across the border in the past year, 2 million? With Biden in power for the 3 more years, it doesn’t matter much even if the Republicans take control of their Congress. And if a Republican becomes president in 2025, it might be way too late. Gay State Conservative, just really doesn’t get it with border control because he lives in the USA and they have already given up most of their basic rights. They think the guns are the answer, but what good are guns if you country is already lost? But I am afraid, with Albanese coming into power in May, we will just become like the USA. This Novak was a tempest in tea kettle on Free Republic. I have correspondence with a number Americans and most didn’t even know the Australian Open was on.
Yes,in the grand scheme of things this matter is very unimportant indeed. But IMO...and in the opinion of at least some others...it could have been, and should have been, handled differently, just as many Australians insist that Singapore refrain from executing an Aussie caught with a kilo of heroin at the airport. An extreme example for sure...but I think you'll get the point.
Yes,the United States is in big,*big* trouble today.Big enough to make me glad that I'm much closer to the grave than to the cradle.
And yes, there are many Americans who have a shockingly limited understanding of the world.I,OTOH,have done a fair amount of traveling in my younger days and have always been interested in world events.
More later perhaps...back to football.
A tainted win for sure by deporting the world number player out of the country.
Nadal played well but he knows for sure Djokovic would have won this tournament if allowed to play.
The good news is the Morrison govt which deported Djokovic, is headed for a thrashing at the polls due in a couple of months.
He thought being on tough on Djokovic would get him a lift in polls but it backfired, the public mood has turned sour on his leadership and his party is getting smashed at the polls.
Correct.
Vax fascists.
What was done to Novax is what is being done over and over to a stupid submissive compliant Aussie people by Woke tyrants.
Novak did not back down.
He lost in the court of a giant continent sized bureaucratic gulag.
But the moral victory was all.his.
Yes.
Deep, deep shame.
If you are referring to Djokovic, as the “real opponent” you are wrong. Nadal beat Djokovic, in the quarter finals in four sets, the last being a tie breaker.
Rafa Nadal is, without, a doubt the greatest athlete of all time and to think an asterisk beside his achievements would define this win is absurd.
