747–400 Taxiing way too fast for the conditions. I wouldn’t be over about 8 knots (maybe 5 going into the blocks) given the snow on the ground. Something that is preventable! I guess it happened yesterday.
I watched 5 seconds of the video. Why does every event that could be shown in raw form always have some Youtube expert sitting in front of a mic and giving his expert commentary on it ?
raw video without commentary here - https://www.reddit.com/r/CatastrophicFailure/comments/sfjv0n/a_china_airlines_cargo_boeing_747_sustained_some/
He’s clearly not an expert, maybe has a private rating but not much more. I can easily identify by some of his statements.
I meant ‘expert’ sarcastically. Not singling him out but it’s a trend on YouTube. Anytime giving just the facts, figures or showing a raw clip would suffice, there is some commentator in front of the camera and a microphone adding his 20 cents and making the video 5x to 10x longer than it needs to be. I know it’s about creating a brand and getting subscribers with the ultimate goal of monetization.. but I don’t care for it. Cut the commentary and just show me the stuff.
Thanks. That’s what I am talking about. That’s all I needed to see.
I flew Cathay Pacific a couple of times back when Hong Kong was autonomous. The captain was British. But mainland Chinese airlines aren’t Cathay.
Here’s the infamous China Airlines flight 006 from 1985

Wrong link. That isn’t 006.
The plane is from Taiwan...not China.
China Air Cargo is China. I’ll see them throughout China and Taiwan but also into the US in Anchorage where I fly. It is a Chinese carrier.…
The flight originated in Taiwan. Does not make it a Taiwan flight. This had nothing to do with all of his visibility during taxing, had everything to do with taxi speed. In order to enhance taxiing capabilities in low visibility conditions and reduce the potential for runway incursions, improvements have been made in signage, lighting, and markings. In addition to these improvements, Advisory Circular (AC) 120-57, Surface Movement Guidance and Control System, more commonly known as SMGCS (acronym pronounced ‘SMIGS’), requires a low visibility taxi plan for any airport which has takeoff or landing operations with less than 1,200 feet runway visual range (RVR) visibility conditions. This plan affects both air crew and vehicle operators. Taxi routes to and from the SMGCS runway must be designated and displayed on a SMGCS Low Visibility Taxi Route chart.
Our charts tell us that foradditional SMGCS information refer to the Aeronautical Information Manual or the particular airport’s SMGCS Low Visibility Taxi Route chart.
If visibility is down at some of the airports we fly into they will just tell you to follow the greens, that is part of their SMGCS plan. Taxiing a heavy aircraft at 30 knots in slippery conditions is just stupid. When the guy narrating the video talks about taxing and low visibility is almost as difficult as doing an auto land he’s just stupid. An auto land is just that, we monitor the systems until touchdown but it’s not a difficult task whatsoever… We don’t have to see anything during a CAT III approach. I have literally had to have a follow me car come out to the runway and use them to get to the gate where we are parked. I’ve landed where visibility is nearly 0…
China Air is a Taiwan carrier. Air China is a China carrier. It does get confusing.
