a massive meteor strike has got to cause some major crust shifting and even pole shifts. And we know there has been massive meteor strikes.

I have a theory that the outer crust moves at a different speed because of some ‘elasticity’ of molten rock at the center. This different rate is the source of our magnetic field.

And the crust swings back and forth like a screen door swings back and forth. Which could have a periodic interval of 26,000 years. Which is how long the poles seem to shift.

Mars does not seem to have an inner core that spins at a different rate- so, no magnetic field. So bye-bye atmosphere and water.

Moon, no magnetic field, so bye, bye water and atmosphere.

Actually I think it was decided some time ago that because Mars is smaller and has less gravity that the escape velocity is less than earth’s so that is why the water and air are gone. I remember reading this at least 50 years ago.
