The Great Good Friday Earthquake of 1964 in Alaska occurred 4 minutes after the Moon was full. During my lifetime I have been a keen observer of natural events in conjunction with the phases of the Moon. Having practiced medicine for over 45 years I know how crazy people get around the time of the Full Moon. I used to plan my ocean fishing trips around the Moon phases. I am convinced that the ocean tides and the pull of the Moon have a much greater effect on humans and natural events than is generally acknowledged. We are mostly made of salt water. The weight of the tidal flows sloshing around the surface of the planet could easily trigger fault lines that have been building up stresses. The Full Moon has the greatest gravitational effect on the Earth and the New Moon is close behind. Hmm...

“ Having practiced medicine for over 45 years I know how crazy people get around the time of the Full Moon. ”

Years ago, a friend’s GF was a nurse in a nursing home. The residents had no idea what the moon phase was. She said when the moon was full you could hardly keep folks in their own rooms. I believe there is something to what you say.

Of course this is true. Hard to believe it is being discussed as if it were some new discovery.

In the past many people perceived the earth to be flat because day-to-day experiences made it feel flat.

Today we tend to think of the earth as solid other than the oceans and rivers and lakes. But it’s much more like a liquid then we would typically think.

Even skyscrapers have to bend and sway or they will break. We can see during earthquakes how the ground shifts in almost a liquid fashion.

Just as the moon causes ocean tides so the rise and fall of the crust of the earth is in accordance with its position relative to the sun and moon.

Not denying the moon may have effects but a Moon’s perigee and apogee are not always synced with full moons. The moon at perigee is 224 thousand miles away and at apogee it is 251 thousand miles away. When you have a full moon synced at perigee, then that is a supermoon and at apogee that is a micromoon. I think the moon has varying effects on the Earth and the inhabitants depending on it’s orbit and the earths spin/time of day in that region of Earth that the moon is closest to as it hits perigee, no matter what “phase” the moon is in.

It would be more interesting to compare dates of Earthquakes and eruptions with those dates when the moon is in exact perigee over those regions the moon is directly over during the Earth’s daily spin cycle as it hits the nearest point and the pulls away in its orbit. The earth will also be spinning under and vectoring sideways away from the lunar pull and away from that perigee point. If the vectoring forces hit and concentrate on certain fault lines, then I could see Earthquakes happening. There are nights that working in the hospital and things are crazy, we ask about if it is a Full moon, but then we realize it isn’t. However Lunar Perigee might be driving people mad, no matter what the phase of the moon happens to be.

Good posting.

Also relates to origin of the term “lunatic” for someone affected by the full Moon.
