Isn’t Canada a parliamentary system like the UK? If so, then he doesn’t run nationally so its not a good comparison. The only voters he personally answers to are those of his borough. He get the PM position by internal party politics. Then external party politics, forming a coalition with other parties since his party didn’t win enough seats in parliament.

The PM is almost always in a safe riding. The PM also stands for the face of the party. You know if the Grits get elected Trudeau will be PM. The coalition PM is going to be someone like Trudeau because the coalition is with even more left parties like the NDP. The Liberals are the big dog in the coalition, so it will be one of theirs, and Trudeau has name recognition due to his evil legal father.
